Many people today find their jobs are no longer working for them in ways it had when they started their job. This can be related to changes in their organization including downsizing, restructuring, lay offs or changes in management.
It may involved changes in their job role and responsibilities, increased work loads, as well as, changes in systems or technology that make doing their jobs more difficult rather than easier.
For some, it is the realization that they are expected to do more and more while their job classification and compensation remains the same.
They have come to realize the idea of advancement or the company looking out for them is a myth. They are beginning to understand that whatever dreams they had about their job or career at their current employer when they started is probably not going to materialize. The only way for them to find a better job or career fit is going to involve a transition to somewhere else.
It is here, we begin to explore possibilities of other jobs or other careers, as well as, the prospect of being self-employed, if that is feasible. I often encounter people who have an idea for an entrepreneurial pursuit or may be self-employed part-time already and have a dream of developing that into a full-time business.
Sometimes, people have issues and concerns related to the work or the people involved that if could be addressed would make their job less problematic and they would want to continue to work at their current employer.
As a coach, I meet with many people who are trying to make sense of problems they are facing at work such as how to deal with the increasing changes and workload or how to deal with difficult or abusive co-workers and supervisors.
Some people may feel they have too much time toward a retirement to leave or feel there is too much uncertainty in the economy and organizations to be able to find and start a new position with another company. Some times it is possible to find a better job fit with their current employer in another part of the organization.
People I work with overall are looking for problem solving and coping strategies to make things better so they can continue to work their current job. Sometimes this is possible and other times it’s not. It’s more about them problem solving where they can, as well as coming to accept that some things they dislike may not change.
I also encourage people I work with to do periodic inventories of what they like and is working for them at their current job to better balance with what is not working for them.
To some degree all of these possibilities involve people beginning to consider how they may need to reinvent themselves, move out of their comfort zones and explore possibilities related to their desired outcomes. This relates to whether to stay at their current job, transitioning to a different job or career or transitioning to starting a business or being self-employed.
I have been self-employed since 1977 as a psychotherapist and life coach. In 1985,
I began working in organizations doing organizational development that involved organizational assessments, change management, leadership and management development, executive coaching, team development, career counseling and small business coaching. I worked with Fortune 100 companies, as well as medium and small size businesses including family businesses.
During that time I have had to do my own reinvention and updating several times as it related to me changing directions and focus in my own career and business development.
We must periodically as individuals reinvent ourselves just as organizations have to reinvent and update their product and service offerings to meet the changing needs and expectations of their customer markets.
